JOB DESCRIPTION: MEDICAL CODER

TITLE:                                    Certified Medical Coder

JOB SUMMARY:        Responsible for coding medical chart notes. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

·      Assign and sequence diagnosis (ICD-10) and procedure (CPT) codes correctly per coding conventions and government/insurance regulations.

o   Review patient charts for accuracy.

o   Analyze medical records for documentation deficiencies and inconsistencies.

o   Assess whether additional codes can be assigned based on chart documentation.

·                Follow up with providers regarding pending queries. 

·                Collaborate with the rest of the coding team to ensure all work is billed out in a timely manner.

·                Communicate and educate providers regarding best coding and documentation practices.

·                Advise the billing departing regarding correct coding.

·                Keeps up to date with coding rules and conventions 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

·                Prior experience within a healthcare setting preferred.

·                AAPC or AHIMA certification preferred. 

·                A strong understanding of medical terminology and anatomy. 

·                Proficiency in computer skills in relation to coding operations.
